Positive & Negative: The Effects of Social Media on Young People
Social media can be a great tool for communication, but it also has many harmful effects, particularly on younger generations today. Find out more below.
Social Media
Six Degrees was the first recognized social media site which was launched twenty years ago in 1997 . Today, there is a variety of social media channels, many of which can be linked together for users to cross-post. The benefits of social networking are clear, such as being able to connect with others from around the world with the click of a button, creating virtual relationships, real-time sharing of information and promoting businesses through paid and unpaid advertising. However, the negative effects cannot be overlooked, and there are constantly issues regarding privacy, bad ratings destroying business credibility, time wasting and of course, cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying occurs across electronic technology such as mobile phones, computers, and the Internet in general, particularly social media sites. Cyberbullying can be much more damaging than physical bullying as it can happen 24 hours a day, reaching young people when they are alone. Harmful messages and images can also spread very quickly and once something is spread on these sites, it is very difficult to delete. It is reported that around a quarter of young people have experienced cyberbullying or harassment on social media sites, with young females being more likely to receive the online abuse. Cyberbullying has been known to cause depression amongst young teens which has sadly led to many cases of suicide.
Social Media Sites
Instagram is one of the worst channels for young people’s mental health, causing feelings of anxiety and inadequacy among younger generations struggling with body image or low self-esteem. Over 90% of 16-24-year-olds today use the Internet mainly for social media, and sites such as Instagram and Snapchat are ranked the worst for young people, perhaps as they are image-based, which can sometimes be more effective in sending a message.

On the Other Hand, …
Social media can also assist younger generations in gaining knowledge of the world and society around them, as they can be updated on news events in real-time. Not only this, but it is a form of entertainment and as long as it is not overused, can benefit those looking for something to do. Young people can also be in contact with their friends instantly and make connections worldwide also.
Social media can definitely have a lot of negative effects, but by educating young people on how to use it and voice when they are being targeted by cyberbullies, it can be used as a positive space for communication.
